Single-ply membrane roof systems are a single layer roof system, ranging in thickness from 40 mils to 90 mils, installed over rigid insulation. Single-ply membranes can be mechanically fastened, fully adhered or ballasted depending on the application. Single-ply membrane roof system are ideal for wide-open roof areas or roofs that expect to receive little or no foot traffic.
TPO, also know as Thermoplastic Polyolefin, is a single layer roof membrane that can be held in place by ballast, be fully adhered to the substrate or also be mechanically fastened to the roof decking. As with all single-ply membranes, TPO is available in various thickness and roll widths to accommodate each particular project. Laps in the TPO membrane are heat-welded together to make a watertight seam.
PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is known for its durability and longevity, particularly on roofs that are susceptible to fatty oils (restaurants) or jet fuel exhaust (airports). PVC also offers greater puncture resistance than other single-ply membranes. PVC membranes have proven themselves to be the superior option when it comes to choosing a new single-ply roof system. Laps in the PVC membrane are heat-welded together to make a watertight seam.
Ethylene Propylene Monomer, or more commonly know as EPDM, is an extremely durable and flexible synthetic rubber sheet membrane that has been installed throughout the United States for over 40 years. EPDM can be used in a wide variety of roofing applications, is available in black or white and also available in multiple widths to meet the particular needs on each project. Laps in the EPDM membrane are adhered together to make a watertight seam.
Metal Roof Rehabilitations, or metal building retrofits, offer another option to pre-engineered metal building (PEMB) owners who are looking for roof replacement options for a metal roof system.
TPO, PVC or EPDM single-ply roof membrane can be combined with new “future-filler” insulation boards and be installed directly over an existing metal roof system, eliminating the need for tear off and disruption to the normal operations of the building.
All single-ply membrane roof manufacturer’s offer extended labor and material warranties for these new roof systems, which make them an excellent option to building owners looking for a long-lasting and worry-free roof system for years to come.
